BRYAN - Senior Bronson Burgoon tied the school record with a seven-under-par 65 on Saturday to lead No. 20-ranked Texas A&M into second place after the opening round of the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Golf Club.

The Aggies shots 14-under as a team and trail No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State (-19) by five strokes going into Sunday's final round, which will start at 8 a.m. Admission is free and live scoring is available online at www.golfstat.com.

Burgoon shares the individual lead with Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler as both players broke the tournament record of 66 set by Texas Tech's Oscar Floren in 2006. Burgoon previously carded a 65 at the 2008 Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes after heavy thunderstorms forced Saturday's morning round to be cancelled. Players were allowed to lift and replace their golf balls in the fairways because of the saturated condition of the course. As a result, half the players and half the teams in the field shot par or better.

"Our guys were prepared and did a good job," A&M Head Coach J.T. Higgins said. "Under the conditions, you would expect good teams and good players to play well and they did. Bronson and Fowler are great players and had awesome rounds. Bronson is always up for the challenge and I've seen Fowler play enough to know that he doesn't like to get beat, either. We are excited about tomorrow's round and I think everyone will see a different golf course and a tougher challenge."

San Diego State is in third place at 4-under, followed by Kent State (-3), New Mexico (-2), Wichita State (even), Baylor (+1), No. 12 Texas Tech (+4), No. 16 TCU (+4), Ohio State (+5), Lamar (+13) and Kansas (+16).

Paired together, Burgoon and Fowler put on a spectacular display with each posting seven birdies and no bogeys on the rain-softened course. Fowler birdied five of the first six holes and shot a six-under 30 on the front nine.

"The course played about as easy as it could but you still had to make putts and hit good shots" Burgoon said. "I knew I had to make some birdies to get on top of the leaderboard. I was a little frustrated at first and knew I had to step up my game."

A&M junior Andrea Pavan and is tied for fifth, senior Matt Van Zandt shot a two-under 70 and is tied for 13th, sophomores John Hurley and Nacho Elvira carded 71s and are tied for 20th, and freshman Geoff Shaw had an even-par 72 and is tied for 30th.

Competing as individuals for the Aggies, junior Austin Schauer fired a 70 and is tied for 13th, senior Clay Hodge carded a 71 and is tied for 20th, and freshman Jordan Russell and sophomore Conrad Shindler had 73s and are tied for 40th.
