TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior Ashley Freeman fired a two-under-par 70 on Friday as Texas A&M dropped into a tie for seventh place after two rounds of the NCAA Women's Golf West Regional at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.
The Aggies were tied for second after opening with an even-par 288, but shot nine-over in the second round. The top eight teams and two individuals from each of three regionals will advance to the championship finals May 19-22 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
Top-ranked Arizona State (556) leads by 16 strokes going into Saturday's final round. No. 3 Southern California (572) is in second, followed by UC Irvine (573), Texas (578), TCU (582), No. 10 LSU (583), A&M (585) and Arkansas (585).
Arizona and California are three shots below the cutline at 588. Other scores are No. 13 Pepperdine (594), Oregon (597), San Francisco (598), San Jose State (604), Northern Arizona (608), Baylor (608), Long Beach State (609), UNLV (612), Colorado (617), Oral Roberts (617) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (618).
"We hit the ball well again but we didn't putt as well as we did yesterday," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "Freeman played well and her two-under really helped us. We're still in good position and we'll come out tomorrow and see what we can do."
Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda is the individual leader with a nine-under total of 67-68=135. Freeman is tied for eighth at 72-70=142.
A&M sophomore Stephanie Smith (69-77=146) is tied for 26th, sophomore Lauren Johnson (71-80=151) is tied for 57th and sophomore Alexa Porter (79-77=156) is tied for 86th.
Freeman had three birdies and only one bogey on the day. She has made only two bogeys through the first two rounds. Zwartynski had 15 pars and a birdie with just two bogeys.
