COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M soccer team was recently awarded the 2008-09 Aggie Cup trophy for its success both on and off the playing field.
The Aggie Cup is a year-long competition between the 20 different athletic teams at Texas A&M. It helps student-athletes grow and builds unity among teams as well as within each individual team. Competitors are judged in the five commitment areas of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program: Academics, Personal Development, Career Development, Athletes Supporting Athletes and Community Service.
Teams earn points based on their involvement in each of the five areas. The top five teams are recognized and the top three earn monetary rewards from the Life Skills Department to be spent on the team per compliance approval.
The Aggie soccer team received $500 for its first-place finish. Women's swimming came in second place and earned $350, while equestrian finished third and took home $150. Fourth place went to women's basketball while softball and men's basketball tied for fifth.
The 2009-10 competition for the Aggie Cup begins June 1 and runs through the academic school year.
