TOLEDO, Ohio - No. 12-ranked Texas A&M shot a 14-over-par 298 on Tuesday and is tied for 12th place after the opening round of the 112th NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Inverness Golf Club.

A&M sophomore Conrad Shindler had the shot of the day with a hole-in-one on the 186-yard, par-3 third hole, the toughest hole on the course in the first round. He used a five-iron for his first career ace.

The 54-hole stroke play portion of the tournament, which will determine the individual champion, continues through Thursday. The top eight teams will advance to match play on Friday and Saturday.

Inverness, site of eight major championships, lived up to its rugged reputation. Only 15 of the 156 players in the field shot par or better and the average score was almost four-over at 75.74.

The Aggies were 12-over on holes four through seven, including six-over on the 481-yard, par-4 seventh. A&M came back to play the final 11 holes in just two-over.

"We played very solid today and with so much heart," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "The back side of this course is two or three shots harder than the front and it took a lot of poise, heart and determination to keep us in the game. We played the back well and because of that we are still in contention.I like where we stand. We are in a great spot with a good chance to advance to match play."

Burgoon was three-over through eight holes, but played the next six in three-under to get back to even par. He bogeyed the par-4 16th to finish at one-over. After his ace, Shindler suffered double bogeys on the seventh and 10th holes. He added a pair of bogeys before dropping a birdie on the 16th.

Pavan was five-over through seven, with double-bogeys on the fourth and seventh, but played his last 11 holes in even, despite posting bogeys on the final two holes. Hurley and Van Zandt each played the back nine in even after struggling on the front. Hurley was four-over on the opening nine holes while Van Zandt was five-over.
