TOLEDO, Ohio - No. 7 seed A&M defeated No. 2 seed Arizona State, 3-1-1, Friday morning to advance to the semifinals at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Inverness Golf Club.
The Aggies will play No. 6 seed Michigan, which upset No. 3 seed Southern California, 3-2, today at approximately 2 p.m. Live scoring and video is available at golfstat.com. The video link is http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/leaderboards/player/static/player_1495.html.
The top three seeds all lost. No. 8 Georgia upset No. 1 Oklahoma State (3-2) when Brian Harman birdied the last hole to beat Rickie Fowler. The only higher seed to win was No. 4 Arkansas, which edged No. 5 Washington (3-2).
Georgia and Arkansas will face off in the other semifinal match. The NCAA Championship match is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
A&M can finish no lower than tied for third, which is the highest national finish in school history. The previous best was fourth place in 1982.
A&M's Bronson Burgoon (4 and 3) and John Hurley (3 and 2) easily won their matches. Conrad Shindler closed out a 2 and 1 victory with a birdie on the 17th hole.
Matt Van Zandt also birdied the 17th to square his match, but the players elected not to finish after Burgoon's victory sealed the match. Andrea Pavan lost his match, 4 and 3.
"Bronson and John took it to them early and were never in danger of losing," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "It was fantastic to secure two wins early. Conrad and Matt played their hearts out, with Conrad winning the 15th and 17th holes to close out his match. Andrea didn't play well early but he started playing well late in the round. I think he'll be ready to go this afternoon. It was a great team effort and we're excited to go to the final four."
