ALBANY, Ga. - Texas A&M freshman-to-be Sara Beth Davis of Victoria, Texas, won three matches this week at the 94th Women's Southern Amateur before falling in the semifinals to the eventual champion.
After tying for second in Monday's qualifier with a three-under-par 69, Davis posted wins against three other college players. She opened with a 3 and 1 victory against Kentucky's Heather Lott, then defeated Mississippi's Sara Grantham (4 and 3) and Mississippi State's Gina Sharp (19 holes). She lost to 14-year-old phenom Alexis Thompson, the reigning U.S. Junior champion, who went on to claim the title on Friday at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club.
Davis, who recently graduated from St. Joseph High School, was the top-ranked senior in Texas. She won a qualifier for the 2008 U.S. Junior Girls Championship and advanced to the second round in match play.
