The Texas A&M All-America doubles tandem of Conor Pollock won the doubles crown at the Recoating West USTA Men's Professional Tennis Tournament with a 6-2, 7-6 (1) upset victory over third-seeded Alejandro Gonzalez and Eduard Struvay of Columbia last weekend at the Del Oro Tennis Complex in Loomis, Calif.
The run through the California tournament culminated a big week for Krajicek and Pollock, who were also selected to compete on the USTA Summer Collegiate Team, administered by the USTA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The pair was among 24 of the nation's top collegiate tennis players selected to the team. The USTA Summer Collegiate Team is an elite training program for the top American collegiate tennis players designed to provide college players with valuable exposure to the USTA Pro Circuit in a team-oriented environment during the summer months. Krajicek and Pollock were the only players from the Big 12 Conference selected for the elite squad.
Krajicek and Pollock were wild card entries into the USTA pro event, and tallied wins over Raian Luchici and Phillip Simmonds (6-2, 5-7 [10-5]), Filip Krajinoic and Alex Kuznetsov (4-6, 6-4 [10-7]), and Todd Paul and Tim Smyczek (6-1, 6-4) before knocking off Gonzalez and Struvay in the final. Former Aggie All-American Lester Cook was seeded fourth and posted two singles wins in the tournament before falling to eventual champion Jesse Witten, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
