CHICAGO - Former Texas A&M women's basketball star Takia Starks (Houston, Texas) will accept the Protege Best Collegiate Athlete Award during the 106 & Park Red Carpet Pre-Show held in conjunction with the 2009 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards on Sunday, June 28, hosted live by comedian/actor Jamie Foxx at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
The award presentation will occur during the live pre-show which kicks off at 5 p.m. (CT) with the awards show immediately following at 7 p.m. (CT) on BET (local Suddenlink Cable Channel 26). The BET Awards annually recognizes and celebrates the achievements of the most influential African-Americans in music, acting, sports and entertainment. Scheduled live performers include Fabolous, Young Jeezy, Ne-Yo, Soulja Boy, Kanye West, Jay-Z and fellow Houstonian Beyoncé.
Texas A&M's all-time leader in scoring (1,977), field goals made (783), field goals attempted (1,913), three-point field goals made (178) and three-point field goals attempted (517), Starks led the Aggies to a school-record four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2008. She was a three-time member of the All-Big 12 Conference First Team and was the program's first two-time Associated Press All-America honorable mention selection.
