Five members of the Texas A&M men's and women's swimming teams saw action on the first day of swimming at the FINA World Championships on Sunday at Rome's Stadio del Nuoto.

Former A&M swimmer Triin Aljand (Estonia) and sophomore-to-be Rita Medrano (Mexico) competed in the prelims of the women's 100-meter butterfly. Aljand hit the wall in 59.00, while Medrano turned in a time of 1:00.47.

In the men's 100 breaststroke prelims, former A&M swimmer Alejandro Jacobo (Mexico) posted a time of 1:01.60.

Senior-to-be Julia Wilkinson (Canada) swam to a time of 2:13.75 in the prelims of the women's 200 individual medley.

Former A&M swimmer Shawn Clarke (Barbados) swam in a pair of races. Clarke led off Barbados' 400-meter freestyle relay with a team-best time of 50.40 and the foursome turned in a time of 3:27.15. Clarke also posted a time of 26.52 in the 50 butterfly.
