Texas A&M senior tight end Jamie McCoy (Midland, Texas) was named to the "watch list" for the prestigious John Mackey Award, which is annually given to best tight end in college football, by the Nassau County Sports Commission on Thursday.
In his first season as a tight end in 2008, McCoy emerged as one of the top pass-catching ends in the Big 12 Conference with 43 catches for 500 yards and five touchdowns. Originally recruited as a dual-threat quarterback, McCoy caught at least one pass in every game and 30 of his 43 catches produced first downs for the Aggies.
McCoy's 43 catches ranked third among Big 12 tight ends last year, trailing only 2008 Mackey Award winner Chase Coffman of Missouri (90-987) and 2008 first-team All-American Jermaine Gresham of Oklahoma (66-950). Six Big 12 tight ends are on the 2009 Mackey watch list, and the Aggies will face six teams with Mackey candidates on their rosters.
McCoy is the second Aggie to be selected to a watch list for a national award. Fellow senior Kevin Matthews (Sugar Land, Texas) was named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which is annually given to college football's top offensive center.
