New crop of runners pace Aggies in Waco to open season

WACO - Newcomers to the Aggie cross country program led the way as Texas A&M opened the 2009 season with a pair of runner-up team finishes behind Baylor at the Bear's Twilight Invitational.

The top five runners for the Aggie women over the 4,000-meter on Baylor's Intramural course were freshman, led by a seventh-place finish from Itzel Cetina in 14 minutes, 35 seconds, as A&M totaled 53 points in the team scoring. Baylor won the women's team title with a tally of 16 points, led by individual winner Nichole Jones (14:08). Dallas Baptist finished third in team scoring with 62 points.

In the men's race, covering 6,000 meters, freshman Stephen Curry placed sixth overall in 19:25 as he led a group of four Aggies across the line. Texas A&M scored 37 points for second place behind the 19 from Baylor, who was paced by individual winner Robbie Knorr (18:49). Dallas Baptist placed third with 78 points.

Joining Currey in the leading foursome of Aggie men that placed 7-8-9 were Graham Northcutt (19:32), Jeremy Warren (20:14), finished 18th.

Christina Munoz, running attached this weekend, placed 12th in 14:53. She will be part of the Aggie squad during the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Penberthy Intramural Field.

Behind Cetina in the women's race was Natosha Rogers in eighth place with a time of 14:38. Then Katherine Devlin finished in 13th (14:54) with Tara Upshaw in 15th (14:57) while Amanda Jenkins (15:05) rounded out the scoring for the Aggie in placing 17th.

Emilie Fischer (15:30) finished in 24th place. Amber Weems (15:38) were the next A&M pair to finish in 26th and 27th. Then the next tandem for the Aggies included Sarah Balfour (15:48) and Catherine Wright (15:57) in 29th and 30th. Kristen Brown (36th, 16:17) and Shawn Dalglish (42nd, 16:55) rounded out the squad.

Also running for the Aggie men were Matt Ross (23rd, 20:30), Eric Gosset (24th, 20:32), Ryan Snapp (25th, 20:36), Oscar Ramirez (30th, 20:59), Raul Cetina (32nd, 21:04), George Stredny (34th, 21:20) and Sam Mutschler (37th, 21:52).
