ALBUQUERQUE - The No. 7-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team closed with an 11-over-par 299 on Saturday and tied for fifth at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the University of New Mexico's Championship Golf Course.
Earlier in the day, the Aggies completed the rain-delayed second round with a 10-under-278 as all five players in the lineup broke par.
UNLV cruised to a 16-stroke victory in the 17-team event, shooting 21-under (843). San Diego State was second at 859, followed by BYU (867), Baylor (868), A&M (292-278-299=869) and Pepperdine (869).
UNLV's Derek Ernst (67-68-73=208) and Colby Smith (73-64-71=208) shared the individual title.
A&M junior John Hurley tied for ninth with a three-under total of 71-66-76=213. His second-round 66 was a career-best and included a six-under 30 on the front nine. Hurley posted 15 birdies in the 54-hole tournament.
Senior Andrea Pavan (71-71-74=216) tied for 18th, freshman Cameron Peck (75-71-74=220) and sophomore Geoff Shaw (75-70-75=220) tied for 24th, and junior Nacho Elvira (75-71-76=222) tied for 41st. Competing as individuals, sophomore Jordan Russell (73-73-75=221) tied for 33rd and redshirt freshman Case Cochran (78-77-76=231) tied for 75th.
Shaw was three-over with six holes to play in the second round before reeling off five straight birdies to finish at two-under.
The Aggies are back in action at the NCAA Preview Sept. 27-28 in Seattle.
