MIDLAND, Texas - The Texas A&M women's tennis team won all three of its first-round doubles matches on the first day of the fall season-opening Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational, but the Aggies weren't as fortunate in singles play as they won only one of six first round matches.
"We had a good day in the doubles, but we had a tough first round in singles," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "The jitters kind of got to us at the start, but in the second matches, we were a lot more aggressive and showed signs of improvement. We just need to go out and trust our shots more."
Freshman Nazari Urbina, the No. 7 singles seed, was the only bright spot for the Aggies in the first round of singles, as she defeated Shannon Mackenzie of North Texas, 6-1, 6-1. Urbina then defeated Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 6-2, 7-6, to advance to the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, A&M's Christina Amo, Ashley Turpin all suffered first-round setbacks in singles. Each rebounded with consolation first-round victories.
In doubles, Urbina and Olivier defeated Abilene Christian's Lauren White and Julia Mongin, 8-1. A&M's Christina Amo defeated ACU's Jaclyn Walker and Dina Pavlin, 8-2, to advance to the Round of 16.
Play resumes Saturday and concludes Sunday with the championship matches.
