MIDLAND, Texas - Texas A&M men's tennis newcomer John Lewis (Birmingham, Ala.) moved on to the round of 16 in singles by pulling off an upset in his Aggie debut on the opening day of the 10th Annual Midland Collegiate Invitational held Friday at the Midland Racquet Club.
Lewis, a sophomore transfer from Alabama, had a first-round bye and knocked off fourth-seeded and preseason No. 85-ranked Attila Bucko of Baylor, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10), in the round of 32.
Senior Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) also advanced in the singles draw with a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Eldad Campbell from Division II power Abilene Christian. He later lost a hard-fought three-set match to No. 40-ranked Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, in the round of 16.
In doubles action, Lewis and Lunt netted an 8-5 first-round win over Bruno Rosa and Oscar Podlewski of Rice. Singles and doubles competition continues tomorrow at 9 a.m.
Klegou, Karimi Advance at USTA Wild Card Tournament...Sophomore Alexis Klegou (Dunkerque, France) and junior Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) both picked up first-round victories at the USTA men's future singles wild card tournament held Friday night at the Polo Tennis & Fitness Club in Austin, Texas. Klegou downed Mac Roy, 6-3, 6-0, while Karimi won a third-set tiebreaker over Jon Robert Leonik. Tournament play continues through Sunday.
