WACO, Texas - Two Texas A&M men's tennis players advanced to the round of 16 after the first day of play at the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate Invitational held Friday night at the Baylor Tennis Center.
In his Aggie debut, freshman Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) won two opening-round matches to reach the round of 16 in the top singles draw. He defeated Alastair Barnes of Tulsa in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and later dispatched preseason No. 114-ranked and 13th-seeded Matteo Fago of Tennessee, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-1. Rated the No. 25 overall prospect in the class of 2008 by the Tennis Recruiting Network and the second-best junior player out of the Lone Star State, Bautista will take on top-seeded and top-ranked Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
Junior Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) also opened up the fall season on a high note with a pair of straight-set victories over Eduardo Salas of New Mexico State, 6-2, 6-3, and Santiago Centeno, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to tomorrow's round of 16 in the singles B draw. Tournament play continues through Sunday.
