TULSA, Okla. - Texas A&M men's tennis players Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) and John Lewis (Birmingham, Ala.) reached the round of 16 in the prequalifying singles draw at the 2009 D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Karimi, a junior, was the only Aggie of the five participating in the prequalifying draw to not receive a first-round bye. He defeated Frideric Prandecki of North Carolina State in the opening round, 6-2, 7-6 (2), and later Chris Eriksson of Saint Louis in the round of 32 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, for a spot in tomorrow's round of 16.
Lewis, a sophomore transfer from Alabama already having a strong fall tournament season, also advanced to Sunday's action winning a third-set super tiebreaker versus No. 25-seeded Giovanni Vaglietti of San Diego State, 6-7 (2), 6-1, 1-0 (4).
Play continues through Oct. 11 with the qualifying and main draw of singles and doubles.
