CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 19-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team fired a one-under-par 287 on Saturday to climb into a tie for 10th place after two rounds of the Tar Heel Invitational at the University of North Carolina's Finley Golf Course.

The round tied for the third-best in school history and was the lowest since a one-under 291 at the 2007 McGuire Intercollegiate in Albuquerque.

A&M improved 17 strokes from Friday's opening round. The Aggies' 304-287=591 total trails leader Michigan State (568) by 23 strokes going into Sunday's final 18 holes. The Aggies are 12 shots behind second-place Alabama (579).

Four of A&M's five players shot par or better on Saturday, led by senior Ashley Freeman's one-under 71. Junior Julia Boland and freshman Sarah Beth Davis each shot even-par 72. Freshman Chloe Garner had a 76.

"The girls played like I knew they could on this course," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "I challenged them to have as much fun as they possibly could and they rose to the challenge. I'm very proud of them because they realize what they can do against such quality competition."

Davis (72-72=144) is tied for 12th place, six strokes behind leader Sara-Maude Juneau (70-68=138) of Louisville.

Freeman (76-71=147) is tied for 26th, Boland (76-72=148) is tied for 32nd, Zwartynski (80-72=152) is tied for 63rd and Garner (81-76=157) is tied for 84th.

No. 4 Auburn and Vanderbilt are tied for third at 582, followed by Wake Forest (584, No. 21 Virginia (584), No. 13 Duke (588), Tennessee (588), No. 22 Louisville (589), A&M, No. 25 South Carolina (591), No. 20 Florida State (591), North Carolina (592), North Carolina State (594), Kent State (599), UNC Wilmington (601), No. 6 Denver (602) and East Carolina (627).
