COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team swept a doubleheader against Navarro College, 13-1 and 7-0, Wednesday evening at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Pitchers Lindsey Sisk and Mel Dumezich combined for 14 strikeouts and allowed just one unearned run in the twin bill. Junior Kelsey Spittler led the offense going 3-for-3 with two triples and four RBIs, while freshman Meagan May continued to shine with three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs.
"Our pitchers did a great job," said A&M head coach Jo Evans. "It was good to see Mel and Lindsey out there, our two newcomers. They really had great control and threw outs the whole game. I'm really pleased with them setting the tone in the circle.
"Offensively, we were much more aggressive tonight. It's fun to see all the things that we focused on and made a commitment to in practice, actually take place in the games. I'm pleased with our progress and I'm happy about our young players and what they're able to contribute at this point. They are just going to keep getting better and better."
After allowing an unearned run in the top of the first inning of game one, a two-run triple to the center field wall by Spittler put the Aggies in the lead. Spittler scored on a Navarro error for a 3-1 lead.
Singles by freshman Lauren Schwirtlich and Spittler added a run in the third, before the Aggies erupted for six runs in the fourth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run from May and RBI triples from Spittler and junior Andrea Tovar.
Junior Bailey Schroeder and Alex Reynolds crossed the plate in the sixth off of RBIs from senior Macie Morrow and Schwirtlich. A&M led 13-1 and Sisk fanned her seventh and eighth batters to finish the game in the top of the seventh.
The Aggies got off to a quick start in the second contest with three consecutive hits. May's three-run long ball - her fifth of the fall - got A&M out to a 3-0 lead.
Siegel scored Sisk in the second and Morrow plated sophomore Kelsea Orsak in the third to give the Aggies a 5-0 advantage.
In the fifth frame, Schwirtlich connected for her team-high fourth hit and touched home plate on a wild pitch.
Dumezich's first home run of the fall - a solo shot to left field - capped off the scoring in the sixth, 7-0. The Whitting, Ind., native tallied six K's in the circle and gave up just two hits for a complete-game shutout.
Schwirtlich went 4-for-7 with five runs, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Orsak and Dumezich added two hits and two walks each, while Schroeder walked twice and scored two runs.
The Aggies close out their fall competition with two games against McLennan on Monday, Oct. 19. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and admission is free to the public.
