WACO, Texas - The Texas A&M women's tennis team won five of seven matches in the first round of the singles main draw today at the ITA Texas Regional at the Waco Regional Tennis Center.
A&M's Elzé Potgieter, the No. 7 seed, defeated Madura Ranganathen of North Texas, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 64. Potgieter will face Mirna Cicak of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Lauren Santacroce dropped her first set against Maria Martinez of UTA but came back to win, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Santacroce will take on Texas' Krista Damico Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Sheri Olivier defeated Nikoa Matovicova of UTA, 6-2, 7-5, in the opening round and will face Kayla Duncan of TCU in the round of 32 on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Morgan Frank got a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sarah Lancaster of Texas. Frank advances to face Irina Paraschiv of North Texas Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
In a match that lasted nearly four hours, A&M's Stephanie Davidson held off Mariaryena Gutierrez of Lamar, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Davidson will take on Karolina Filipak of Baylor Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Aggie sophomore Janelle Cuthbertson defaulted her match to No. 3 seed Aeriel Ellis of Texas after suffering an ankle injury. Ellis had won the first set, 6-1, and the second set was tied at 1-1 when Cuthbertson retired.
Nazari Urbina also suffered a first-round loss, dropping a three-setter to Amanda Craddock of Texas.
Christina Amo was eliminated from the qualifying draw after falling to Roxana Enica of Stephen F. Austin, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
A&M won all four of its doubles matches, but results had not been posted by press time and will be available tomorrow.
The singles finalists and the doubles champion earn an automatic berth into the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Conn.
