COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Former three-time Texas A&M men's tennis All-American Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and his partner Cory Parr, a former Wake Forest All-American, captured the doubles title at the 2009 10sPortal.com Classic held over the weekend in Austin, Texas.
Pollock and Paar defeated two of the top-seeded tandems at the tournament including second-seeded and No. 715 world-ranked Victor Estrella of the Dominican Republic and American Dennis Zivkovic, 6-0, 6-3, in the opening round and fourth-seeded and No. 853-ranked Daniel Garza and Antonio Ruiz-Rosales of Mexico, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals.
It was Aggie versus Aggie in the championship match as Pollock and Parr were pitted against former Texas A&M standout Brett Joelson (Beaverton, Ore.) and his partner Ashwin Kumar who advanced to the finals with an upset over top-seeded and No. 549-ranked Americans Nicholas Monroe and Eric Nunez, 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the semis. Pollock and Parr took home the doubles crown winning the third set super-tiebreaker, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (8). Joelson and Kumar have won two doubles titles on the pro circuit this year.
Pollock also turned in a solid effort in the singles main draw. He beat sixth-seeded and No. 532 world-ranked Jonathan Eysseric of France with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 victory in the second round, but later fell to second-seeded and No. 334-ranked American Michael McClune in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-3.
