WACO, Texas - Texas A&M freshman Nazari Urbina won her fifth consecutive match to capture the consolation title at the ITA Texas Regional today at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Urbina defeated Shahazoda Hatamova of SMU, 6-3, 6-4 in the consolation final.
"Nazari was definitely the highlight in singles for us," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "It was great to see her work her way through the bracket and come away with the win today."
A&M's Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce advanced to the finals of the doubles championships but fell to Pavi Francis and Marta Lesniak of SMU, 8-4. Earlier in the day, Frank and Santacroce eliminated teammates Elzé Potgieter and Urbina, 8-5, in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
Francis and Lesniak receive an automatic berth into the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 5-8 in New Haven, Conn.
With two teams reaching the semifinals and Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Olivier reaching the quarterfinals, Kleinecke was especially pleased with the doubles results throughout the tournament.
"We had a great showing in the doubles with two teams reaching the semifinals and another nearly making it to the semis," he said. "At this point, I'm not set on our doubles teams, but it was exciting to see these teams so well."
The Aggies conclude their fall season Oct.30-Nov. 1 at the Baylor Invitational in Waco.
