COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M men's tennis doubles tandem of junior Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) knocked off two rival Texas duos including the top seed to advance to the semifinals at the 2009 Wilson/ITA Texas Regional Championships held Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Grigorov and Lunt upset top-seeded and No. 13-ranked Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas, 8-6, in the round of 16, followed by an 8-5 victory over Chris Camillone and Jon Wiegand of Texas, 8-5, in the quarterfinals. They will meet third-seeded and No. 25-ranked Raony Carvalho and Rafeal Garcia of Texas Tech tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. (CT) for a spot in the championship match.
"It was a really good effort by Marcus and Alexey today, especially having not played a lot together this fall," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "They have good chemistry and did a good job (against Kutrovksy and Zavala). They served for the match at 7-5, but didn't win there and didn't get discouraged to break serve and eventually win the match."
The Aggies also produced another semifinal appearance with the fifth-seeded lefty combination of junior All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) and junior Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, Fla.). They moved past the quarterfinals with a dominating 8-2 win over Alex Hilliard and Daniel Whitehead of Texas. Krajicek and Dadamo will square off against fourth-seeded Longhorns Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
In the singles draw, both Krajicek, the No. 5 seed, and Dadamo, the No. 9 seed, moved on to the quarterfinals. Krajicek, ranked No. 30 in the preseason Campbell/ITA rankings, defeated Marius Cirstea of TCU, 7-6, 6-3, while Dadamo downed No. 47-ranked Damico in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Krajicek will face No. 28-ranked and third-seeded Raony Carvalho of Texas Tech in tomorrow's quarterfinals, while Dadamo takes on Artem Baradach of SMU. Both singles matches will start at 9 a.m. (CT).
"They (Krajicek and Dadamo) both had a really good day," Denton said. "Jeff had a tough one against (Kellen) Damico after being down a set and a break. Austin is playing better as the tournament goes on and is playing his best tennis. In doubles, they have wanted to play together, but we haven't had the opportunity to do so until now. I was very impressed with how well they played today. I can see them as a potential doubles team for us in the spring."
Play continues tomorrow morning with the quarterfinals of singles beginning at 9 a.m. (CT) followed by the semifinals and finals in doubles at approximately 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. (CT) respectively. The event is open and free to the public. Live video streaming from the six Stadium Club courts at the Mitchell Tennis Center can be viewed online at: www.AggieAthletics.com.
