AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas A&M men's tennis team had one player and two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals of the University of Texas Invitational held Friday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Junior newcomer Jack Seider (Austin, Texas) reached the quarterfinals in the singles B draw and the doubles main draw. Seider, a transfer from TCU, defeated David Subirats of UT Arlington in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in the round of 32 and James Thorp of Lamar, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round. He will face Justin Raiti of Laredo Community College tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. (CT) for a spot in the semifinals.
Seider also teamed up with freshman Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) where the pair made some noise in the doubles draw with an 8-5 victory over Brett Powers and Mick Walter of Saint Edward's in the round of 16 and an 8-4 win over Nicholas Boulieris and Otavio Perim of Marquette in the round of 32. The Aggie duo will meet No. 13-ranked and top-seeded Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas tomorrow in the quarterfinals at noon (CT).
Junior Patrick Dean (Dallas, Texas) also reached doubles quarterfinal action with an 8-1 victory over Mateus Campos and Antoine Raffaelli of Laredo CC.
In singles B consolation play, Dean along with freshman walk-on Sameer Patwardahn (Mumbai, India) and freshman Beau Blackshear (Brentwood, Tenn.) advanced to the second round which will begin tomorrow at 9:40 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. respectively. Fall tournament play continues through Sunday.
