The Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team won 11 of 13 possible events on its way to an impressive 131.5-102.5 victory over Harvard on Friday at Blodgett Pool on the Harvard University campus.
The Aggies (1-0 overall) came to the pool ready to compete and logged victories in the first nine events of the meet. Four Aggies grabbed multiple victories with swimmers Nikita Denisyako, Balazs Makany and Omar Enriquez and diver Grant Nel all taking a pair of individual wins.
"The guys really did a good job of taking care of business," Aggie head coach Jay Holmes said. "We wanted to get off to a fast start, and the 400 medley relay did a good job of that. They led from start to finish, which is exactly what we hoped to do. In the next race, (freshman) Omar (Enriquez) was in a tight battle in the 1,000 free with one of their senior swimmers, but broke away in the last 150 to put the race away. That really set the tone for the day and we did a good job of keeping the intensity and momentum."
The Aggies got off to a fast start by finishing 1-2 in the first race of the day, the 400-yard medley relay. The A&M foursome of Denisyako, junior Jason Bergstrom, senior Tyler Welch and true freshman William Wagner turned in a second-place time of 3:27.28.
Denisyako also tallied wins in the 200 IM (1:51.80) and the 200 back (1:50.97). Makany swept his specialty with victories in the 100 free (46.41) and 200 free (1:41.43). Enriquez contributed wins in the 1,000 free (9:25.41) and the 200 butterfly (1:52.98).
Nel saw his first action of the season and responded with two wins and two NCAA zone qualifier scores. The Aussie sophomore grabbed gold on the one-meter springboard with a 330.23 point total and then followed with an impressive 407.48 score on the three-meter board. Senior Henry Stevens also logged a zone qualifier with a 321.23 total on the three-meter. Grabbing single victories were senior Strange in the 50 free (21.07) and Snowden in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.41).
The Aggies return to action on Saturday with a 12:30 (CST) dual meet against Boston University in the Competition Pool on the BU campus.
