BATON ROUGE, La. - The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M soccer team earned a solid 3-1 victory over Memphis on Friday and now turns its attention to the 10th-ranked and No. 4 national seed LSU Tigers. The second round match kicks off at 1 p.m. Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The Aggies (15-6-2) scored early and often Friday, netting all three goals in the first half. Junior Whitney Hooper led the way and tallied two goals and an assist for a season-high five points. The forward from Houston, Texas leads the A&M attack with 10 goals. Junior Rachel Shipley equals Hooper's points (24) with eight goals and a team-high eight assists.
LSU (15-4-4) earned a dominating 7-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the first round. Malorie Rutledge posted a hat trick in the win and leads the team with 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points. The Tigers held UAPB without a shot or a corner kick.
Sunday marks the first meeting between the two teams, although Texas A&M and LSU have played several exhibition matches over the past few years.
The Aggies seek their 10th Sweet 16 appearance with a win against the Tigers, while LSU looks for its first third-round berth. The winner of Sunday's match faces the winner of top-seeded Florida State/California.
