The last time A&M was ranked was Feb. 18, 2008, when the Aggies were No. 22 in both polls. They were unranked in the next poll (Feb. 25) after losing three straight, ending a school-record streak of 36 straight weeks in the rankings. Prior to that, A&M had been ranked a total of 27 weeks in its history.
A&M (5-1) played three top-20 teams at the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif., beating No. 19 Clemson (69-60) Thursday and defeating No. 16 Minnesota (66-65) Sunday. The Aggies lost to No. 8 West Virginia (73-66) in the tournament semifinals. The Mountaineers, who captured the 76 Classic title, are No. 7 by the AP and No. 8 in the coaches poll. Clemson remained in the rankings (No. 18 AP/No. 19 coaches) while Minnesota dropped out.
Big 12 foes Kansas and Texas were 1-2 in both polls. A&M is the only other Big 12 team in the rankings, although Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Missouri received votes.
New Mexico, A&M's opponent on Dec. 12 in Houston, also received votes. The Aggies play Washington (No. 12 AP/No. 10 coaches) Dec. 22 in Seattle.
