The Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team dropped a narrow dual meet decision to Texas, 166-134, on Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
The Aggies tallied six individual wins against the Longhorns, including a pair of wins from seniors Julia Wilkinson and Alia Atkinson. Also grabbing victories were senior Kristen Heiss and junior Maria Sommer.
"There were lots of good, close races that could have gone either way," head coach Steve Bultman said. "We're disappointed that we didn't win, but pleased that we swam well and competed well."
Wilkinson posted victories in the 100 backstroke (54.26) and the 100 free (49.71), and took second in the 200 IM (2:01.84). All of Wilkinson's individual races produced NCAA "B" cut clockings. Atkinson swept her specialty with wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.49) and 200 breast (2:11.85), both in NCAA "B" cut times.
Sommer grabbed gold in the 50 free in a "B" cut time of 23.00, and Heiss was victorious in the 200 back in "B" cut of 1:57.88.
"Julia and Alia stepped up and raced extremely well," Bultman said. "Kristen Heiss had a couple of strong races, and Maria Sommer did a great job. (Freshman) Maureen McLaine had a great 1,000 with a lifetime best by a chunk."
In all, the Aggies grabbed 14 NCAA consideration times against the Longhorns. Also grabbing "B" cuts while taking runner-up finishes were Heiss in the 200 free (1:47.16), sophomore Rita Medrano in the 200 butterfly (1:58.73) and junior Jaele Patrick on the 1m springboard (298.42) and the 3m springboard (310.51).
Both relays also nabbed B cuts. The 200 medley relay of freshman Sarah Woods, Sommer, Heiss and Wilkinson turned in a time of 3:24.65.
