COLLEGE STATION, Texas--Mike Sherman has announced today that Joe Kines is going to retire as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Texas A&M football team.
"God has blessed me so much," Kines said. "I am a man of faith and family and I feel like it is time for me to retire. I came here to help and I hope I have helped a little. I wish we would have had a little more success. I really want to thank the players because they gave me and the staff everything they had and did everything we asked. As with all of the players I have coached, I will keep an eye on them and wish them the very best."
"Texas A&M is a great place with outstanding people and terrific traditions and this has been a great experience for me and my wife," Kines said. "With the young players and the incoming recruits, I know the future is bright for Aggie football. It's time for me and Rubye to spend a lot more time with our grandsons."
"Joe Kines is class act in every sense of the word," Texas A&M Head Football Coach Mike Sherman said. "At the conclusion of my post-season meeting with Joe Tuesday night at my home, we came to an agreement that this was the appropriate time for Joe to retire. I asked him to stay on board through the transition of the new defensive coordinator and thankfully he agreed."
"Joe helped us out of a tough spot when Reggie Herring left for the Dallas Cowboys right before spring drills in 2008 and has done so with class, integrity and great energy," Sherman said. "I know the players and people surrounding our football program are better for having had the chance to know Joe Kines. I wish Joe and Rubye all the best. I can't thank Joe enough for all that he has done for Texas A&M and for the way he has represented the Aggie football program."
