COLUMBIA, Mo. - Texas A&M freshman Rita Medrano (Aguacalientes, Mexico) broke the Texas A&M school record in the 200-yard butterfly at a last chance meet held at the Mizzou Aquatic Center on Sunday afternoon.
Medrano, seeking to better her NCAA consideration time of 1:57.30 in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships, set a school record in the 200 fly for the second straight day. Medrano recorded a time of 1:56.73 to chop more than a half-second off the mark she set a day earlier.
The Aggies also improved upon their NCAA consideration time in the 200-yard medley relay. The group of Alia Atkinson (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Triin Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia), and Maria Sommer (Brenham) clocked a time of 1:38.32, improving on their time of 1:38.35 that earned A&M a second-place finish in the race at the Big 12 Championships on Wednesday.
Alia Atkinson earned her first NCAA consideration performance of the year in the 200-yard individual medley after hitting the wall in 1:59.44. The consideration performance will give Atkinson the opportunity to swim the race at the NCAA Championships as she already has qualified automatically for nationals in both breaststrokes.
Junior Ella Doerge (Clive, Iowa) set a lifetime-best in the 100-yard freestyle. Doerge recorded a time of 49.80, going under the 50-second barrier for the first time in her career.
Seniors Sally Ranzau (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Tracey Renfrew (Cibolo) both set lifetime bests in the 50-yard freestyle, 25.62 and 24.98, respectively, as did sophomore Casey Hurrell-Zitelman (25.17). Junior Leslie Dlugopolski (Mequon, Wis.) also set a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly (57.59).
The Aggies will learn on Friday how many swimmers will qualify for the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station on March 19-21.
