Texas A&M football standouts Stephen McGee and Mike Goodson were selected on second day of the NFL Draft on Sunday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
McGee, a quarterback from Burnet, Texas, was selected with the first pick of the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys, while Goodson, a running back from Houston, was selected 10 spots later by Carolina Panthers.
Voted the Aggie Heart Award winner by his teammates last season, McGee set A&M's career completion percentage school record (59.5 percent), and ranked second in career total offense (7,225), fourth in career passing yards (5,475) and third in rushing yards by a quarterback (1,750). A three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection, McGee received the prestigious FCA Bobby Bowden Athlete of the Year earlier this year.
As a senior, McGee suffered a shoulder injury early in the season and was limited to just 85 passes. For the season, McGee completed 56 of 85 passes for 586 yards and two touchdowns in eight games of action.
"Stephen McGee will be a great fit for the Cowboys and the Dallas organization is a great fit for Stephen," Aggie head coach Mike Sherman said. "He is very much in tune with what it means to be a Dallas Cowboy and I am confident he will surpass all expectations. Where the Cowboys picked him at the beginning of the 4th round I truly believe was a great pick."
It was a dream come true for McGee who told DallasCowboys.com that he always wanted to play for the Cowboys as a child.
"I remember being six or seven years old and there's a video of me in the front yard with a Dallas Cowboys helmet and jersey on with my dad throwing passes to me," McGee said. "I had Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith posters on my wall. I had the Dallas Cowboys Wheaties box after they won the Super Bowl autographed. That's what I grew up around. Certainly when you put that star on there's a lot more pride that goes into wearing it."
Goodson, who declared for the NFL Draft as a junior, also had an injury-plagued 2008 season. Despite being limited to 10 games, Goodson led the Aggies in rushing with 406 yards on 94 carries and also caught 37 passes for 386 yards. Always a big play threat, Good recorded the Aggies' longest rushing touchdown of the year (80-yarder against Oklahoma State) and longest receiving touchdown of the year (62-yarder against Miami). In 36 career games, Goodson rushed for 1,964 yards on 374 carries (5.3 yards per carry) and caught 90 passes for 860 yards and seven scores.
"There is no question Mike Goodson has the talent to fulfill what the Panthers hope to attain with that pick," Sherman said. "We are all hopeful Mike has great success in the NFL."
