LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech scored seven runs in the first two innings--five of those with two outs--to pace the Red Raiders to a 10-6 win over No. 10 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon before 2,503 fans at Dan Law Field.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped their second Big 12 series of the year and fell to 20-11 and 7-5. Tech improved to 14-19 and 6-6 in league play.
The Red Raiders took an early lead in the first. With two outs, A&M starter Barret Loux hit Chris Richburg on a 2-2 pitch and the next batter, Scott LeJeune, sent his second home run of the year over the fence in left center field to put Tech up 2-0.
Texas Tech scored five times in the second off Clayton Ehlert, who relieved Loux after the first, to extend its lead to 7-0. The big blows in the frame were a Jeremy Mayo two-run home run and a Taylor Ashby two-run single to left.
Freshman Adam Smith put the Aggies on the board in the third, as he launched his fifth home run of the season on to the track stadium behind the fence in right.
In the fourth, a line-drive double off the glove of Justin Berry at third and into left field by Brett Parsons scored Joe Patterson and made the score 7-2.
The Aggies put together late rallies in the third and fourth innings, pushing two into scoring position in both frames, but were unable to capitalize.
Freshman Ross Hales entered to start the third and provided a big stop for A&M. After allowing a bloop double to the first batter he faced, Hales retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced before allowing Tech a run in the sixth on a two-out flare to center field off the bat of Joey Kenworthy.
A&M would cut into the Red Raider lead in the eighth off closer Chad Bettis. After a Joe Patterson double put runners at second and third with one out, Kevin Gonzalez doubled off the top of the wall in center field to make the score 8-4.
After Tech answered with two of their own in the eighth, Luke Anders capped the scoring for the Aggies with a two-run single off Bettis in the ninth.
Loux (1-1) was tagged with the loss, tossing just one inning and giving up two runs on the one hit. Hales allowed six hits and three runs in five innings of work, while walking two and striking out four.
Miles Morgan (2-4) got the win, as the senior allowed five hits and a pair of runs while matching a season high with six innings of work. He walked three and struck out two. Bettis earned his sixth save of the year after tossing the final three innings for Tech.
Patterson, Smith and Anders had two hits apiece to lead the Aggie offense, while Gonzalez and Anders drove in a pair on the afternoon. LeJeune and Mayo each drove in three runs for Tech.
Texas A&M returns to action on Tuesday when the Aggies host the Houston Cougars at Olsen Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
