A&M's Johnson Named to Manning Award Watch List

Record-setting Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson was named to the "watch list" for the 2009 Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, on Monday.
Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 239-pound junior from Humble, Texas, set a school record for single season passing touchdowns with 21 scoring strikes in his first season as a starter in 2008. Johnson also became Texas A&M's first 400-yard passer with a school record 419 passing yards against Kansas State. Johnson started the final 10 games of 2008 at quarterback after taking over for the injured Stephen McGee, and responded with 2,435 yards and 21 touchdowns on 194-of-326 passing (59.5 completion percentage).
The Manning Award watch list includes 38 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2009 season. The winner will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a February banquet in New Orleans. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances. Each of the 11 FBS conferences is represented on the Watch List with at least two candidates, while the Big 12 leads the way with seven Watch List selections.
"We have another great class of quarterbacks this season," said Archie Manning. "We have 38 quarterbacks on our Watch List, but there are any number of other guys who could step into the picture as the season gets going. It's going to be a lot of fun to watch another tremendous college football season."
