Series Notes

  1. Tech leads the series, 64-56, but A&M has won three of the last four meetings, including two straight in College Station. A&M swept the regular-season series last year (79-73 in Lubbock and 79-70 in College Station). Tech rallied for an 88-83 victory in the first-round of the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City.
  2. The Aggies own a 34-21 edge in games played in College Station with a 7-4 mark at Reed Arena.

Game Notes

  1. Both teams are coming off road losses on Wednesday that ended two-game winning streaks. The Aggies fell at Oklahoma State (76-69) and Tech lost at No. 6 Texas (95-83).
  2. A&M is 11-0 at home (3-0 Big 12) while Tech is 2-5 in true road games (0-3 Big 12).
  3. A&M has won 14 straight home games (six straight in Big 12 play), tied for the 14th longest home winning streak in the country. The Aggies are 27-2 at Reed Arena since the start of last season.
  4. A&M's 3-3 start in in Big 12 play ties for its second-best in the league's 14-year history. The 2006-07 team, which finished 27-7 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, started 5-1. Mark Turgeon's first A&M team in 2007-08 also started 3-3 en route to an 8-8 finish.
  5. A&M has played six nationally-ranked opponents, the most of any Big 12 team. A&M played four nationally-ranked non-conference opponents (that doesn't include New Mexico, which entered the rankings the next week). The Aggies' schedule-to-date is ranked as the 19th-toughest nationally by CBS Sports.
  6. A&M is 2-4 against ranked teams this season. The Aggies beat No. 19 Clemson (69-60) and No. 16 Minnesota (66-65) at the 76 Classic in Anaheim in November. Five of the Aggies' six losses have all been to teams that have been ranked in the top 25 for multiple weeks this season (Texas, West Virginia, Washington, New Mexico and Kansas State).
  7. A&M and Oklahoma are the only Big 12 teams with five players who have made at least four three-pointers in a game this season -- B.J. Holmes (5 vs. Washington and North Dakota), Donald Sloan (4 vs. New Mexico, 5 vs. Samford and Oklahoma State), Nathan Walkup (4 vs. The Citadel), Dash Harris (4 vs. Oklahoma State) and Khris Middleton (4 vs. Prairie View A&M). A&M was 17-of-94 (.181) on three-pointers through five Big 12 games but made 10-of-24 (.417) at Oklahoma State. In non-conference play, the Aggies made .370.
  8. The Aggies have shot better than 50 percent from the field in six games this season. A&M is 27-0 under Mark Turgeon's when it makes at least 50 percent and is 35-3 at home when it makes better than 40 percent.
  9. A&M averages 28.1 free throws per game, second most in the league behind Kansas State (33.0).
  10. A&M is 14-0 this season with its opponent scores fewer than 70 points and has won 18 straight. A&M is 36-3 at home under Turgeon when its opponent scores fewer than 70 points.
  11. In Big 12 play, A&M ranks third in the league in scoring defense (69.0) and ranks fourth in field goal defense (.425).
  12. A&M has allowed just 59.3 points in its three Big 12 wins, but has given up 78.7 points in the three losses.
  13. A&M has held 15 opponents under 43 percent shooting from the field. Under Turgeon, the Aggies are 36-3 at home when their opponent shoots under 45 percent.

About Texas Tech

  1. The Red Raiders finished 14-19 last season and placed 11th in the Big 12 with a 3-13 mark.
  2. Tech is in its third season under Coach Pat Knight. The Red Raiders are led by junior Mike Singletary, who averages 15.7 points per game.
  3. The Red Raiders have beaten Iowa State and Oklahoma in league play and lost to Missouri at home in overtime. In non-conference play, Tech posted impressive home wins against Washington, Stanford and UTEP.

Last Year in College Station
COLLEGE STATION (AP/Jan. 28, 2009) -- B.J. Holmes had six 3-pointers and finished with 24 points, both career-highs, to lead Texas A&M to a 79-70 win over Texas Tech. The win broke a three-game losing streak for the Aggies. The sophomore didn't miss from long-range until his seventh attempt. He hit five 3s in the first half, including three in just more than a minute. His sixth one gave A&M a lead after the Red Raiders' had tied it with about 13 minutes left. The Aggies didn't trail after that and led by four before Derrick Roland's 3-pointer stretched A&M's lead to 71-64 with just more than three minutes remaining. Tech was led by Robert Lewandowski and John Roberson, who scored 20 points each.

Last Time They Met
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP/March 11, 2009)--Mike Singletary single-handedly led the biggest comeback in Big 12 tournament history, scoring all 29 of Texas Tech's points during a second-half surge that pushed the Red Raiders to a 88-83 win against Texas A&M on Wednesday night. Singletary finished with 43 points to break the tournament scoring record of 38 set by Iowa State's Marcus Fizer in 2000 against Baylor. The last basket in Singletary's amazing stretch was a driving layup past Bryan Davis that put the Red Raiders up 79-78 with 39.4 seconds left and erased the last part of a 21-point deficit. Alan Voskuil and John Roberson followed that with a pair of free throws apiece to push the lead to five. Donald Sloan led the Aggies with 22 points and Josh Carter added 15. Davis opened the second half with a pair of free throws to put A&M ahead 50-29. Darko Cohadarevic hit back-to-back baskets to get Tech's offense off to a better start than the first half, when the Red Raiders missed their first 10 shots to fall into a 15-2 hole. But the rally really got started once Singletary--who didn't even start the game--got rolling.

Roland's Value

  1. Senior guard Derrick Roland's will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right leg on Dec. 22 against Washington. Roland was considered by many to be the top perimeter defender in the Big 12. He was the Aggies' No. 2 scorer, a team captain and perhaps the team's top leader.
  2. To illustrate Roland's importance to the team, because of foul trouble or injury he played fewer than 25 minutes in all three losses. His fewest minutes played came in the close losses to New Mexico (14 minutes, early foul trouble) and Washington (16 minutes, leg injury). He also got in foul trouble against West Virginia (24 minutes) and was on the bench during a key second-half run by the Mountaineers.

Player Notes

    • Senior guard Donald Sloan scored 22 last year against Texas Tech in The Big 12 Tournament. He scored a game-high 27 in the loss at Oklahoma State on Wednesday, making 5-of-6 three-pointers. Sloan is only the second player in A&M history (Bernard King, 1999-03) to score at least 1,200 points with 300 assists and 400 rebounds in a career.
    • Senior forward Bryan Davis is averaging 11.2 points in Big 12 play and has blocked a shot in 15 straight games. He scored 12 points (6-6 FG) with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks in the win vs. Colorado.
    • Sophomore guard Dash Harris ranks second in the Big 12 in assists/turnover ratio (2.6). A&M is 19-2 when Harris has at least 3 assists in his career (16-0 at home), losing only to Connecticut in the 2009 NCAAs and earlier this season at Kansas State. Harris scored a career-high 14 points at Oklahoma Stat on Wednesday, making a career-best 4-of-9 three-pointers.
    • Junior forward Nathan Walkup scored a career-high 16 points with a season-best 8 rebounds against Colorado. He is averaging 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in Big 12 play.
    • Junior guard B.J. Holmes scored a career-high 24 points (6-7 treys) against Tech last year in College Station. He tied a Big 12 record by making six straight three-pointers.
    • Freshman forward Khris Middleton is averaging 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in Big 12 play and has started in eight straight games.
    • Sophomore forward David Loubeau scored 14 points (6-7 FG) at Oklahoma State on Wednesday.
