Series Notes

  • A&M leads the series, 126-73, with a 73-28 record in College Station and an 8-3 edge at Reed Arena.
  • The teams have split the series the last two years. A&M posted an 84-73 victory last year in College Station. The Bears last win at Reed was in 2008, when they prevailed 116-110 in five overtimes.
  • A&M leads the series 8-2 over the last 10 games.

Game Notes

  • A&M and Baylor are meeting in men's basketball for the 200th time. The Bears are A&M's second-most common opponent behind Texas (216 games).
  • Both teams have won two straight games. The Aggies are coming off a road victory (77-74) at Missouri on Wednesday and Baylor is coming off an 84-63 home win against Iowa State. A&M is 4-1 in its last five games.
  • A&M is 12-0  (4-0 Big 12) at home while Baylor is 3-2 (1-2 Big 12) in true road games.
  • The Aggies have won 15 straight home games, tied with Kentucky for the 12th-longest streak in the nation. It is the second-longest streak in the Big 12 behind Kansas' 54-game streak. A&M is 28-2 at home the last two seasons.
  • A&M has won seven straight Big 12 home games and is 11-3 overall in its last 14 league contests.
  • A&M's 5-3 start in Big 12 play ties for its second-best in the league's 14-year history. The 2006-07 team, which finished 27-7 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, started 7-1. Mark Turgeon's first A&M team in 2007-08 also started 5-3 en route to an 8-8 finish. A&M started 3-7 last year but closed with six straight wins to finish 9-7.
  • Baylor is A&M's seventh nationally-ranked opponent, the most of any Big 12 team. A&M played four nationally-ranked non-conference opponents (that doesn't include New Mexico, which entered the rankings the next week). The Aggies' schedule-to-date is ranked as the 19th-toughest nationally by CBS Sports.
  • A&M is 2-4 against ranked teams this season. The Aggies beat No. 19 Clemson (69-60) and No. 16 Minnesota (66-65) at the 76 Classic in Anaheim in November. Five of the Aggies' six losses have been to teams that have been ranked in the top 25 for multiple weeks this season (Texas, West Virginia, Washington, New Mexico and Kansas State). The other loss was at Oklahoma State, one of the nation's toughest venues.

About Baylor

  • The Bears finished 24-15 last season and placed ninth in the Big 12 with a 5-11 mark. Baylor advanced to the championship game of the postseason NIT.
  • The Bears are in their seventh season under Coach Scott Drew. Baylor is led by junior guard LaceDarius Dunn, who averages 18.5 points, and senior guard Tweety Carter, who adds 17.1 points.
  • In Big 12 play, Baylor's lone Big 12 road win was at Texas last week (80-77 in overtime).

Last Year in College Station

COLLEGE STATION (AP/Jan. 14, 2009) -- Chinemelu Elonu and Bryan Davis both scored 17 points and Elonu had a career-high 16 rebounds as Texas A&M beat No. 21 Baylor, 84-73. The last time these teams met in College Station, it took five overtimes for Baylor to get a 116-110 victory in the longest game in Big 12 history. A&M led by 11 points after the first half and 3-pointers by Derrick Roland and Sloan pushed the lead to 45-29 with about 18 minutes left. The Bears made a late run to cut the lead to six points with about 1 1/2 minutes left, but A&M then made 10 free throws to secure the win. Tweety Carter had 16 points for Baylor, while LaceDarius Dunn added 14. Texas A&M took advantage of 11 turnovers by Baylor to score 18 points. The normally strong 3-point shooting Bears struggled in that area, going 5-of-16. Dunn hit one in the fourth quarter to extend his streak of games with at least one to 21. The Aggies led by four points before going on a 9-2 run keyed by a 3-pointer by Sloan to take a 39-28 halftime lead. Elonu contributed 11 offensive rebounds. Sloan and Josh Carter both added 15 points for A&M.

Last Time They Met

WACO (AP/Feb. 14, 2009) -Curtis Jerrells and Tweety Carter scored 14 points apiece to lead Baylor past Texas A&M 72-68 in a physical game. Trailing by five, the Aggies pulled within 70-68 on a 3-pointer by Donald Sloan, but Jerrells answered with a drive and a short jumper with 12.6 seconds remaining. After Sloan missed another 3-point try and A&M quickly fouled, Jerrells dribbled out the clock before the Aggies could foul him. Bryan Davis, Derrick Roland and Sloan had 13 apiece. Kevin Rogers and Anthony Jones scored 12 each for Baylor. The loss dropped A&M to 3-7 in Big 12 play, but the Aggies won their last six games to tie for fourth (9-7) in the final standings.

Roland's Value

  • Senior guard Derrick Roland will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right leg on Dec. 22 against Washington. Roland was considered by many to be the top perimeter defender in the Big 12. He was the Aggies' No. 2 scorer, a team captain and perhaps the team's top leader.
  • To illustrate Roland's importance to the team, because of foul trouble or injury he played fewer than 25 minutes in all three losses. His fewest minutes played came in the close losses to New Mexico (14 minutes, early foul trouble) and Washington (16 minutes, leg injury). He also got in foul trouble against West Virginia (24 minutes) and was on the bench during a key second-half run by the Mountaineers.
