COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Nolan Cromwell, the Texas A&M offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach the past two seasons, has accepted an assistant coaching position working with the wide receivers with the St. Louis Rams organization, Aggie Head Football Coach Mike Sherman announced today.
"I appreciate the passion, energy and work ethic Nolan Cromwell brought to us over these last two years," Sherman said. "You can also add patience, since it is not easy being an offensive coordinator under an offensive head coach. I wish he, and his wife Mary, nothing but the best. I am thankful for the class and character they brought to our football family."
Cromwell, is a veteran NFL assistant coach having worked 17 years on the NFL level before serving the past two seasons as the Aggies' offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. Cromwell spent nine years as the wide receivers coach with the Seattle Seahawks, while he served one year as the wide receivers coach at the Green Bay Packers (1998) and as the special teams coordinator for the Packers from 1992-97. He started his coaching career as a defensive and special teams assistant with the Los Angeles Rams in 1991.
"I am excited to be back with the Rams' family," Cromwell said. "I appreciate Coach Spagnuolo for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to working with the receivers on our roster and the coaching staff."
"I really enjoyed the past two years being a part of the Aggie family," Cromwell added. "These are great people here in Aggieland and the players and coaches are outstanding. I think Coach Sherman has a great vision for this football program and is building a solid foundation. With him, it all starts with getting the right players to fit into the program and I believe the last two recruiting classes are examples of that. I see nothing but success for the Aggies in the future and I will follow them closely. I know Coach Sherman will push the offense to play even better than it did last year. I also know he will get things fixed on defense and in all phases of the game. He will get it done."
"I was drafted by the Rams and played my entire NFL career with the organization and this was an opportunity I could not pass up," Cromwell stated. "This is truly a unique experience getting this opportunity with the organization I care for very deeply."
A second-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 1977 out of the University of Kansas, Cromwell was a defensive back who switched to quarterback for the Jayhawks and earned Big Eight Offensive Player of the Year honors as well as All-America accolades. Cromwell played his entire 11-year (1977-87) NFL career with the Rams' organization. He earned Pro Bowl honors four times and was the NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1980 as well as earning NFL Defensive Back of the Year honors by Football Digest in 1984. He ended his NFL career as the Ram's all-time leader in interception return yardage with 671 yards on 37 picks. He played in Super Bowl XIV following the 1979 season for the Rams against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
