Series Notes

  1. Tech leads the series, 64-57, with a 36-18 record in Lubbock and a 6-4 edge at United Spirit Arena.
  2. A&M has won seven of the last 11 games. The Aggies swept the regular season series last year, including a 79-73 win in Lubbock, but Tech rallied from a 21-point deficit for an 88-83 win in the first round of the 2009 Big 12 tournament in Oklahoma City.

Game Notes

  1. A&M has won three straight and has been idle since a 78-71 win against No. 20 Baylor at home last Saturday. The Red Raiders have won two straight and posted a 72-71 win at Oklahoma on Tuesday.
  2. The Aggies' win streak began with an 85-70 win against Tech on Jan. 30 in College Station. That was also the last time the Red Raiders lost.
  3. After opening Big 12 play with a 1-2 mark, A&M has won five of its last six games.
  4. The Aggies are 2-4 (1-3 Big 12) in true road games while Tech is 13-1 (3-1 Big 12) at home.
  5. A&M is 12-3 in its last 15 Big 12 games, including a 4-3 road record.
  6. A&M's 6-3 start in Big 12 play ties for its second-best in the league's 14-year history. The 2006-07 team, which finished 27-7 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, started 8-1. Mark Turgeon's first A&M team in 2007-08 also started 6-3 en route to an 8-8 finish. A&M started 3-7 last year but closed with six straight wins to finish 9-7.
  7. A&M has played seven nationally-ranked opponents, the most of any Big 12 team. A&M played four nationally-ranked non-conference opponents (that doesn't include New Mexico, which entered the rankings the next week). The Aggies' schedule-to-date is ranked as the 14th-toughest nationally by CBS Sports.
  8. A&M is 3-4 against ranked teams this season with wins against No. 19 Clemson (69-60), No. 16 Minnesota (66-65) and No. 20 Baylor (78-71). Five of the Aggies' six losses have been to teams that have been ranked in the top 25 for multiple weeks (Texas, West Virginia, Washington, New Mexico and Kansas State). The other loss was at Oklahoma State, one of the nation's toughest venues.
  9. The three wins against ranked opponents ties for the third most in school history with the 2005-06 team. The school record is five in 1978-79. The 2006-07 Sweet Sixteen team had 4 wins vs. ranked foes. If you include only the regular season, the three wins against ranked opponents ties for the second most in school annals.
  10. While the Aggies rank last in the Big 12 in three-point percentage (.241) in league play, A&M leads the Big 12 in field goal accuracy inside the three-point line (.544).
  11. After averaging just 66.2 points through the first six Big 12 games, A&M has averaged 80.0 points in the last three while making 48.2 percent from the field. While the Aggies have made just 27.2 percent from three-point range in the three-game winning streak, they have connected on 55.7 percent inside the three-point arc.
  12. A&M leads the Big 12 in fewest turnovers for the season (11.8) and is second in Big 12 play (11.7). A&M set a school record for Big 12 play with just 4 turnovers vs. Texas Tech on Jan. 30.
  13. The Aggies have averaged 40.0 points in the paint in the last three games and 38.4 in the last five games.
  14. A&M is averaging 30.1 points in the paint this season, just ahead of last year's average of 30.0.
  15. A&M has averaged a whopping 16.7 offensive rebounds and 17.0 second chance points in the last three games.
  16. In the last three games, Bryan Davis (15.3) and David Loubeau (16.3) have combined to average 31.6 points.
  17. A&M averages 28.8 free throw attempts per game, second most in the league behind Kansas State (31.6).
  18. A&M gets 25.9 percent of its points from the free throw line, most in the Big 12 and 13th nationally.
  19. A&M ranks second nationally in free throw rate (FTA divided by FGA) at .533. Kansas State leads the nation at .540.
  20. A&M is 14-0 this season when its opponent scores fewer than 70 points and has won 18 straight.
  21. In Big 12 play, A&M ranks third in the league in scoring defense (69.9).
  22. A&M is the only team in Big 12 play that is allowing fewer than 70 points per game (69.9), less than 44 percent field goal accuracy (.439) and less than 40 percent from three-point range (.382).
  23. A&M has an average rebound margin of +12 in the last three games. Through 20 games, A&M had a +0.4 margin. The Aggies are 14-1 this season when out-rebounding their opponent.
  24. Bryan Davis scored a season-high 22 points with 8 rebounds in the win vs. Baylor. Davis needs 24 points and 3 steals to become only the third A&M player to score 1,000 points with 600 rebounds, 100 blocks and 100 steals.
  25. B.J. Holmes has averaged 11.0 points and made 45.5 percent (5-11) from three-point range the last two games.
  26. David Loubeau has scored in double figures in four straight games, averaging 15.6 points and 6.5 rebounds.
  27. Donald Sloan has averaged 23.0 points in the last four games. He ranks third in the Big 12 in scoring in league play at 20.1. Sloan also ranks second in the Big 12 in free throws made (61) and attempted (72) in league play.

About Texas Tech

  1. The Red Raiders started Big 12 play 0-3 but have since won four of their last six games. Their only home loss of the season was to Missouri (94-89) in overtime on Jan. 13. In Big 12 play, Tech has home wins against Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. The Red Raiders are in their third season under Coach Pat Knight. Tech is led by junior guard John Roberson, who averages 15.1 points and 5.5 assists, and junior forward Mike Singletary, who adds 15.5 points.

Two Weeks Ago in College Station
COLLEGE STATION (AP/Jan. 30) - Bryan Davis. Play continued with Sloan finishing the fast break with a layup while Tech coach Pat Knight yelled at the officials to stop play so he could attend to his player. Singletary was escorted to the locker room holding his right shoulder and grimacing after being looked at for a couple of minutes.

Last Time They Met
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP/Feb. 21, 2009) - Chinemelu Elonu scored a career-high 21 points and got 12 rebounds to lead Texas A&M past Texas Tech 79-73. The Aggies trailed only a few times in the second half and never more than two points. Both teams went to the free throw line often but the Aggies had more than twice the attempts (51) as did the Red Raiders (22). There were 56 fouls called in the game. Josh Carter added 20 points for the Aggies (19-8, 5-7 Big 12). Alan Voskuil and John Roberson scored 16 each, and Nick Okorie added 14 to lead the Red Raiders (12-15, 2-10). The loss was the fourth straight for Tech.

Roland's Value

  1. Senior guard Derrick Roland will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right leg on Dec. 22 against Washington. Roland was considered by many to be the top perimeter defender in the Big 12. He was the Aggies' No. 2 scorer, a team captain and perhaps the team's top leader.
  2. To illustrate Roland's importance to the team, because of foul trouble or injury he played fewer than 25 minutes in all three losses. His fewest minutes played came in the close losses to New Mexico (14 minutes, early foul trouble) and Washington (16 minutes, leg injury). He also got in foul trouble against West Virginia (24 minutes) and was on the bench during a key second-half run by the Mountaineers.

Depleted Roster

  1. When last season ended, Coach Turgeon thought he would have four senior starters returning in 2009-10. But All-Big 12 center Chinemelu Elonu opted to remain in the NBA Draft and was chosen late in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. Then Roland was lost before the Christmas break to a season-ending broken leg.
  2. In addition,  Turgeon expected to have the services of freshmen big men Kourtney Roberson (6-9, 230) and Ray Turner (6-8, 220) when fall practice began. However, Roberson did not qualify and Turner was not cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse to even practice until mid-December. A&M re-signed Roberson, who is attending a prep school, in November as part of the 2010 recruiting class.
  3. In addition, DeAndre Jordan entered the 2008 NBA Draft after his freshman season. He would have been a junior this year. Jordan was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Clippers.
