COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M women's basketball signee and local A&M Consolidated High School standout Karla Gilbert (College Station, Texas) was recently selected to the prestigious McDonald's All-American Team.
The 6-foot-4 center is the third all-time McDonald's All-American and highest-rated player to ever sign with the Aggies next to current redshirt sophomore Tyra White out of Hickman Mills High School in Kansas City. Rated the No. 9 overall prospect in the Class of 2010 and No. 1 post player in the country by ESPN HoopGurlz, Gilbert is a second generation Aggie as her father, Jimmie Gilbert, played for the A&M men's basketball team from 1983-86. Last season, she averaged 19 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and two blocks per game as a junior.
The 2010 McDonald's High School All-American Basketball Game will be played on March 31 at Value City Arena on the campus of The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Gilbert is a member of the 12-player West Team and will also compete in the WBCA All-America game to be held on April 3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, site of the 2010 NCAA Women's Final Four.
Gilbert and fellow A&M fall signee Kristen Grant (Arlington, Texas) have several scouting services rating the Aggies' recruiting class as high as No. 5 in the country by the All-Star Girls Report. ESPN HoopGurlz also rated this year's signing class as No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference.
