Series Notes
- Kansas leads the series, 14-1, with a 6-0 record in College Station and a 5-0 mark at Reed Arena.
- The Jayhawks have won three straight in the series since a 69-66 A&M win in Lawrence in 2007, the only time a Big 12 South division team has won at Allen Fieldhouse. Since that game, Kansas has won 55 straight home games, the longest streak in the country. Â
Game Notes
- A&M has won four straight and is coming off a 67-65 win at Texas Tech on Saturday. Kansas has won 10 straight and is coming off a 73-59 win at home on Saturday against Iowa State.
- The Aggies have rallied from double-digit deficits in each of the last three games.
- After opening Big 12 play with a 1-2 mark, A&M has won six of its last seven games.
- The Aggies are 13-0 (5-0 Big 12) at home while Kansas is 7-1 (5-0 Big 12) in true road games.
- A&M has won 16 straight home games (eight straight in Big 12 play), tying Duke and Murray State for the ninth longest active streak in the country. The Aggies are 29-2 at home in the last two seasons.
- A&M is 13-3 in its last 16 Big 12 games, second in the Big 12 only to Kansas' 15-1 mark in that span.
- A&M's 7-3 start in Big 12 play is its second-best in the league's 14-year history. The 2006-07 team, which finished 27-7 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, started 9-1.
- Kansas is the Aggies' eighth nationally-ranked opponent, the most of any Big 12 team. A&M played four nationally-ranked non-conference opponents (that doesn't include New Mexico, which entered the rankings the next week). The Aggies' schedule-to-date is ranked as the ninth-toughest nationally by CBS Sports.
- A&M is 3-4 against ranked teams this season with wins against No. 19 Clemson (69-60), No. 16 Minnesota (66-65) and No. 20 Baylor (78-71). Five of the Aggies' six losses have been to teams that have been ranked in the top 25 for multiple weeks (Texas, West Virginia, Washington, New Mexico and Kansas State). The other loss was at Oklahoma State, one of the nation's toughest venues.
- The three wins against ranked opponents ties for the third most in school history with the 2005-06 team. The school record is five in 1978-79. The 2006-07 Sweet Sixteen team had 4 wins vs. ranked foes. If one includes only the regular season, the three wins against ranked opponents ties for the second most in school annals.
- A&M is 0-4 all-time against No. 1-ranked teams. The last two have been close ones. Last month in Austin, A&M dropped a 72-67 overtime decision to top-ranked Texas after never trailing in regulation. In 2006-07, the Aggies lost to No. 1 UCLA (65-62) at the Wooden Classic in Anaheim. Other games against No. 1 teams were an 89-60 loss at Kansas in 1996-97 and a 117-53 loss at UCLA in 1971-72.
- The highest-ranked team A&M has ever defeated was No. 5 Texas (71-69 in overtime) in Austin in 1981-82.
- The last two home games against Baylor and Texas Tech attracted sell out crowds of more than 13,000. A record crowd of 13,648 attended the Texas Tech game on Jan. 30. Monday's game is also expected to be a sellout while the Texas game on Feb. 27 already is sold out.
About Kansas
- The Jayhawks have been ranked No. 1 all but three weeks this season and have not been lower than No. 3.
- Kansas is in its seventh season under Coach Bill Self. The Jayhawks have four players averaging in double figures in scoring, led by senior All-American Sherron Collins (15.4). Junior forward Cole Aldrich adds 11.4 points and 10.1 rebounds. The Jayhawks only loss this season came at Tennessee (76-68) on Jan. 10.
Last Year's Game
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP/Jan. 19, 2009) -- Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich each had 16 points and Kansas downed Texas A&M 73-53. Tayshawn Taylor and Mario Little each hit their first four shots as the Jayhawks roared to a big early lead, which reached 16-4 when Collins drove in for a layup at the 14:49 mark. Little, coming off the bench, scored seven straight points and helped put the Jayhawks on top 40-23 at halftime. Bryan Davis and B.J. Holmes each had eight points for the Aggies, whose 20 turnovers were almost twice their season average.
Sidebars
- A Kansas native, A&M Coach Mark Turgeon's is a former Jayhawk player and assistant coach.
- After leading Hayden HS in Topeka to consecutive Kansas state titles in 1982 and 1983, Turgeon became the first Jayhawk ever to play in four straight NCAA Tournaments. Kansas advanced to the NCAA Final Four in 1986 with Turgeon at point guard current KU Coach Bill Self as an assistant coach.
- After graduating in 1987, Turgeon was an assistant coach at KU under Larry Brown, helping the Jayhawks win the 1988 NCAA title. He went on to serve four more years as an assistant under Roy Williams, which included the Jayhawks' runner-up finish to Duke in the 1991 NCAA Tournament.
- Turgeon still ranks ninth in KU history in career assists with 437. He and KU assistant coach Danny Manning were teammates for three years.
- Kansas junior guard Chase Buford is the son of San Antonio Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford, who played on A&M's 1980 Sweet Sixteen team under Coach Shelby Metcalf. Buford and Turgeon were assistants together at Kansas when it won the 1988 NCAA title.
Roland's Value
- Senior guard Derrick Roland will miss the rest of the season after breaking his right leg on Dec. 22 against Washington. Roland was considered by many to be the top perimeter defender in the Big 12. He was the Aggies' No. 2 scorer, a team captain and perhaps the team's top leader.
- To illustrate Roland's importance to the team, because of foul trouble or injury he played fewer than 25 minutes in all three losses. His fewest minutes played came in the close losses to New Mexico (14 minutes, early foul trouble) and Washington (16 minutes, leg injury). He also got in foul trouble against West Virginia (24 minutes) and was on the bench during a key second-half run by the Mountaineers.
Depleted Roster
-
When last season ended, Coach Turgeon thought he would have four senior starters returning in 2009-10. But All-Big 12 center Chinemelu Elonu opted to remain in the NBA Draft and was chosen late in the second round by the Los Angeles Lakers. Then Roland was lost before the Christmas break to a season-ending broken leg.
- In addition, Â Turgeon expected to have the services of freshmen big men Kourtney Roberson (6-9, 230) and Ray Turner (6-8, 220) when fall practice began. However, Roberson did not qualify and Turner was not cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse to even practice until mid-December. A&M re-signed Roberson, who is attending a prep school, in November as part of the 2010 recruiting class.
- In addition, DeAndre Jordan entered the 2008 NBA Draft after his freshman season. He would have been a junior this year. Jordan was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Clippers.
