SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - No. 5-ranked Texas A&M will defend its title at the John Burns Intercollegiate starting on Wednesday at Leilehua Golf Course.
The 54-hole tournament continues through Friday. Joining A&M in the 17-team field are Nevada, Arizona, Denver, No. 23 UNLV, UTEP, Fresno State, Hawaii-Manoa, Colorado State, BYU, Hawaii-Hilo, Auburn, UCSB, New Mexico, No. 25 SMU, Arkansas and San Jose State.
Representing A&M will be senior Andrea Pavan, freshman Cameron Peck, junior Nacho Elvira and sophomores Geoff Shaw and Jordan Russell. Freshman Case Cochran will play as an individual.
Pavan is ranked No. 41 nationally by Golfweek while peck is No. 50.
The Aggies opened the spring season with a fifth-place finish at the Arizona Invitational earlier this month. Russell placed fourth at eight-under-par (66-70-69=205).
The Aggies shot 28-under to capture the Burns title by three strokes last year.
"We have had great success here in the past and I think we are really comfortable on this course," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "We won here last year and I think the boys are excited about getting back out with an opportunity to win. It always takes a low score to be competitive here but I think we have a team full of guys who are capable of playing really well."
