SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - No. 5-ranked Texas A&M opened with a three-under-par 285 on Wednesday and is in fifth place after the first round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course.

The 17-team tournament continues through Friday. California and No. 25 SMU share the lead at 10-under, followed by No. 23 UNLV (-9) and Nevada-Reno (-7).

Andrea Pavan led the Aggies with a two-under 70. Cameron Peck and Jordan Russell each shot 71 while Nacho Elvira and Geoff Shaw carded 73s. Case Cochran, competing as an individual, had a 75.

California's Stephen Hale leads the individual standings with a seven-under 65.

"We left a lot of shots on the course today," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "We played pretty solid golf but our short games were not very good. The greens were slow and we never adjusted. We left a lot of shots short. I think we'll do better tomorrow and can get ourselves in position to win the tournament."
