COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M soccer team kicks off its spring season on Saturday as it hosts the 15th annual 7v7 Tournament at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
The tournament is played on three different fields, one on the south side and one on the north side of the Aggie Soccer Stadium and a third on the infield of the Anderson Track and Field Complex adjacent to the soccer stadium. Games begin at 9 a.m. and run through 3 p.m.
Texas A&M soccer plays Houston Baptist at 9 a.m., UTSA at 11 a.m., Rice at 1 p.m. and Sam Houston State at 3 p.m.
Admission to all matches is free to the public. Fans must enter through the northwest corner of the stadium. Parking for the event is directly across the street from the entrance in the Reed Arena parking lots. Get there early because the lots will begin charging $5 at noon due to the Aggie baseball game.
"We are looking forward to kicking off our spring non-traditional season," said head coach G Guerrieri. "Starting the season with four 7-on-7 games against different college programs is a great way to challenge our players in a fun playing format."
Matches on Saturday consist of two teams of seven players (six field players and one goalkeeper) competing in two 25-minute halves with a five minute halftime. The playing field is 75 x 44 yards and there is no offside rule.
"Playing as a 7v7 tournament format provides great opportunities for our players to refine their attacking, defending and transition skills in a quick, competitive setting. The games are often high scoring because of the smaller field and the elimination of the offside rule, so it's typically a fun day for our players and for our fans to come out and see several games in one afternoon."
