COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Sweet 16 Texas A&M soccer team posted a perfect 4-0 record to win its 17th Annual 7v7 Tournament at the Aggie Soccer Stadium on Saturday. The Aggies downed Houston Baptist, 5-4, UTSA and Rice, 8-0, and Sam Houston State, 6-2.

In their opening match, at 9 a.m. the Aggies came out ahead against the Huskies of Houston Baptist thanks to the two-goal and one-assist performance of junior midfielder Alyssa Mautz.

"We didn't get off to as crisp a start as we'd liked," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "Defensively, we gave a hard-working HBU team some `gift goals' in transition, but I was more pleased with our intensity at the end of the match and that paid off in setting up Alyssa's game winner in the last two minutes."

A&M then shutout UTSA and was paced by two goals from sophomore Christina Navalta. In that match, the Aggies moved the ball well and stayed in attack for almost the entire game. The A&M goalkeeper was only called upon twice to make saves and picked up a shutout.

In the afternoon, the Aggies cruised past Rice, 8-0. Junior forward Whitney Hooper led all scorers with three goals and two assists.

A&M topped Sam Houston State in the final match of the day behind two goals each from Navalta, junior Nicole Ketchum and freshman Chelsea Jones.

"This has always been a nice event to kick off of our spring season," said Guerrieri. "All seven of these college programs are in different stages of their non-traditional season, but for us it's a nice start to the spring and it's something we hope to build upon."

The next time the Texas A&M soccer team takes to the pitch will be Saturday, March 6, with two 11v11 exhibition games. At 4 p.m. they will face Baylor, and then the Aggies will wrap up the day with a match against Utah at 7 p.m.

Admission to all of A&M's spring games is free to the public.
