NEW ORLEANS - All-America honors for the indoor collegiate season were announced by USTFCCCA this week following the NCAA Indoor Championships. A total of 16 Aggies earned 23 honors for the 2010 indoor season.
The A&M women had nine athletes claim 13 honors with Jessica Beard (400, 4x4), Gabby Mayo (60m, 60H), Jeneba Tarmoh (200, 4x4) and Vashti Thomas (long jump, triple jump) each earning two All-America honors.
For the Aggie men, there were seven athletes claiming 10 honors as the trio of Curtis Mitchell (200, 4x4) and Demetrius Pinder (400, 4x4) earned a pair of All-America honors.
Also receiving All-America honors were Ashika Charan (triple jump), Porscha Lucas (200), Zuheir Sharif (triple jump), Sandy Wooten (4x4).
Lucas improved her school record total of All-America honors to 16. Beard now has nine career All-America honors, which is third best all-time at A&M. Mayo's total of six moves her into a tie with another pair of Aggie hurdle greats in Anjanette Kirkland and Rosa Jolivet.
Charan and Wooten each claimed their fifth career All-America, joining Melissa Gulli, Tresha Henry and Jennifer Williams.
Likewise, the trio of Miller, Phiri and Sharif each attained a fifth All-America to move up the A&M list and join such Aggie legends as Curtis Dickey, Derrick Florence, Randy Hall, Fabrice Lapierre, Bashir Ramzy and Larry Wade.
Texas A&M begins outdoor season in San Juan, Puerto Rico
The defending NCAA Outdoor Champions open the outdoor season amid the Caribbean islands this weekend as they compete Friday and Saturday in the 5th annual Carolina Spring Break Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
On Friday the field events contested will include the hammer, javelin and pole vault, each of which start at 11 a.m. (EST). Later in the evening, around 5:30 p.m. there will be a men's 5,000 meters and a women's 10,000 meters.
Saturday's action begins at 10:00 a.m. (EST) with field events that will include the long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus. The 4 x 100 relay will be the first event on the track, also with a 10:00 a.m. start.
