COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Coach Mike Sherman and the Texas A&M football team ended its first day of spring drills on Tuesday at the Coolidge Practice Fields on the Texas A&M campus. The morning session was held in the McFerrin Athletic Center and both practices were in helmets and jerseys only.
"I was pleased with the energy level of the players and the coaches," Sherman said. "It was a good first day of spring."
Sherman mentioned quarterback Jerrod Johnson would be limited in his throwing in the early part of spring drills after having his right shoulder "cleaned up" after the bowl game. Johnson spent a great deal of the practices working with three candidates who graduated from high school in December and enrolled in the spring at Texas A&M. The three quarterback prospects are Clay Honeycutt from Dickinson High School, Matt Joekel (pronounced JOKE-el) from Arlington High School and Jamiell (pronounced JA-meal) Showers from Shoemaker High School in Killeen. Joekel's brother, Luke, is another early enrollee who attended Arlington High School and Luke is working on the offensive line.
Another Aggie starter who was unable to go through drills was defensive lineman Eddie Brown. Brown had shoulder surgery in the off-season and will be limited in the spring.
The Aggies will continue spring drills on Thursday once again in helmets only and the squad will don the pads for the first time on Saturday. The practices on the Coolidge Practice Fields are open to the public, but fans are asked to sign in at the gate. The practices within the McFerrin Athletic Center are closed due to building fire codes.
The Aggies will hold the Maroon & White Game on Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1 pm at Kyle Field.
