Irving, Texas - Sam Humphreys earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors for his winning effort in the javelin during the Carolina Spring Break Classic in Puerto Rico this past weekend. Humphreys leads the collegiate list for the 2010 outdoor season with a career best of 240 feet, 3 inches.

A freshman from Laredo, Texas (Alexander HS), Humphreys improved upon his high school best of 230-8 in the javelin by nearly 10 feet as he became the fifth best performer on the Texas A&M all-time list. He currently tops the NCAA list by almost eight feet.

The mark produced by Humphreys averages to place fourth in the NCAA Championship final over the past eight national meets. It would have been good for a NCAA runner-up finish in 2006 and 2007 and fourth in three other years - 2009, 2008, and 2005.

While currently 19 years old, Humphreys will turn 20 in September. So, his mark is not eligible to make the U.S. all-time junior list for under-20 competitors. The American junior record in the javelin is 239-0 set by Oregon prep Sam Crouser in 2009.
