The No. 8 Texas A&M men's golf team struggled to an opening round 17-over 305 and stand in a tie for ninth at the Linger Longer Invitational at The Landing at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., on Friday.

The Aggies are 12 shots off the pace set by co-leaders Furman and second-ranked Oklahoma State (+5), but are only five shots out of fourth place.

“It was a pretty disappointing day for us,” Aggie head coach J.T. Higgins said. “We played pretty well on the front and made the turn at four-over, but we really struggled on the back. It was windy and it was swirling around the course, and we made too many bad decisions and bad club selections. The good news is that we have two more rounds of golf. I think we can figure out this golf course and still finish the tournament well.”

Junior Andrea Pavan is tied for 37th (77, +5); freshman Cameron Peck and junior Nacho Elvira are tied for 58th (79, +7).

Furman and OSU shot opening round scores of 293, and are trailed by No. 24 Alabama (+6), No. 15 Georgia Tech (+12), No. 11 Florida State (+13), Kennesaw State (+15), No. 49 Charlotte (+16), No. 20 Georgia (+16), Texas A&M, Coastal Carolina (+17), Louisville (+19), South Carolina-Aiken (+23), San Jose State (+25), Mercer (+26), Oklahoma (+27) and South Alabama (+29).
