The No. 18 Texas A&M women's golf team is in fifth place after the opening round of the Rebel Intercollegiate on Friday at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
The Aggies shot a 10-over 298 and trail Tulane (+2, 290), East Tennessee State (+4, 292), Mississippi (+6, 294) and Missouri (+6, 294). As a team the Aggies struggled on the 10th and 11th holes where they were nine-over par with three bogeys, three double-bogeys and no birdies.
“We had a stretch of holes where we made some mistakes and it cost us in the end,” Aggie women's golf coach Trelle McCombs said.
The Aggies have a pair of seniors near the top of the Rebel Intercollegiate leaderboard. Senior Ashley Freeman is tied for fourth with a one-under par 71, and senior Julia Boland is tied for 12th after carding a one-over 73. Freeman and Boland are chasing Tulane's Linn Gustafsson, Missouri's Julia Potter and Mississippi's Haley Sanders, who tied for the lead with two-under rounds of 70.
“My upperclassmen came through for us,” McCombs said. “Ashley played the way that she is capable of playing all the time. Her mindset was so good all day. Julia's birdie on the 18th hole was an awesome shot. She has been a little snake-bitten for birdies, but once she gets the putter hot she will shoot lights out on this course.”
A&M freshman Sarah Beth Davis is in 71st place with an eight-over 80. Playing as an individual, freshman Aly Smith is in 71st place with a seven-over 79.
The top 10 teams at the Rebel Intercollegiate after the first day were: Tulane, East Tennessee State, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas A&M, Augusta State (+11), Arkansas-Little Rock (+12), Kansas (+12), Oklahoma (+18) and Middle Tennessee State (+20).
