The Texas A&M women's golf team used a late charge to finish fifth at the University of Florida's SunTrust Gator Invitational Sunday at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
The Aggies fired a solid 13-over par 293 to jump two teams on Sunday, and finished the tournament at 57-over with rounds of 303-301-293. A&M finished behind Michigan State (+28), Florida State (+31), Florida (+39) and Chattanooga (+52).
“Overall it was a better day,” Aggie golf coach Trelle McCombs said. “I was glad to see our intensity on the back side. We are going to take a few days off and get back after it for Big 12's next weekend.”
Defending Big 12 Champion Ashley Freeman led the way for the Aggies as she shot an even-par 70 on Sunday to climb 12 spots into a tie for 11th (71-78-70=219). Freeman's round was the third-lowest round of the day.
“Ashley played great this week,” McCombs said. “This course suited her game very well. I'm sure she's is just tuning up to defend her (Big 12) title.”
Senior Julia Boland climbed 10 spots in the standings with a three-over 73 and finished in a tie for 27th at 16-over (78-75-73=226). Junior Sarah Beth Davis finished in a tie for 52nd at 24-over (76-75-83=234). Freshman Chloe Garner climbed nine spots to a tie for 61st after firing a five-over 75 and finished at 27-over (78-84-75=237).
The Aggies return to action April 23-25 at the Big 12 Championships in Norman, Okla.
