The No. 4 Texas A&M men's golf team stormed to a commanding lead after two rounds of the Aggie Invitational on Saturday at the Traditions Club Golf Course.
WEATHER ADVISORY: The start of the final round of the Aggie Invitational men's golf tournament has been moved from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. due to rainy weather that is passing through the local area, Texas A&M men's golf coach J.T. Higgins said Sunday.
The Aggies scorched their home course on Saturday, finishing the day 23 strokes under par and 15 strokes ahead of second-place Oklahoma State. A&M posted a 14-under 346 in the first round and a nine-under 351 in the second round to jump to the big lead. The Aggies' rounds were the two-lowest scores of the day. The top-ranked Cowboys are second at eight-under, followed by No. 14 Texas Tech (-7), San Diego State (-2), No. 7 Texas (+7), New Mexico (+13), No. 24 TCU (+18), Kent State (+19), SMU (+20), Baylor (+23), Colorado (+24) and UTSA (+34).
"We had a great day," Aggie golf coach J.T. Higgins said. "We have eight guys in the top 20 and six guys in the top 10. They played fantastic, and it wasn't like someone went out and shot a 62 or some unbelievable round. It's 67s, 69s and 70s, but everyone is doing it at the same time. It was just a great collective team effort."
Leading the way for the Aggies is sophomore Andrea Pavan, freshman Cameron Peck and junior Conrad Shindler are all tied for ninth at three-under. Pavan shot 70-71, Peck posted rounds of 69-72 and Shindler contributed 71-70.
"Of the six guys in the lineup, no one has shot over par yet," Higgins said. "We approached this tournament as if we were beginning postseason play today. Winning the Aggie Invitational is a goal. We want to win the Big 12. We want to win a regional. We want to win the NCAA Championship. Today was the first step to winning all four of those. It's a big goal, but we're on our way and we'll see if we can finish this off on Sunday."
Competing as non-scoring individuals, the Aggies also received strong play from freshman Case Cochran (t13th, -2), junior John Hurley (t17th, even), junior Bryant Lach (t66th, +11) and freshman Drew Evans (t76th, +18).
"We have seven guys who have been in and out of the lineup," Higgins said. "When someone doesn't get into our lineup, it's not because they didn't play well. It's because someone else played better. It's a deep, competitive team, and this is how our qualifiers are every week. Sometimes it's hard to figure out who the best players are but it's a good problem to have."
