COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Tobi Oyedeji (O-yee-day-jee), a 6-9 power forward from Houston Bellaire and a Texas A&M basketball signee, has been invited to play in the High School Academic All-American Game to be played May 1 at the Felix Events Center in Azusa, California. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (pacific time).
Oyedeji, 6-9 and 215 pounds, averaged just under 16 points per game to go along with eight rebounds per game and was a tremendous shot blocker in helping lead his team to the Class 5A Regional finals. Oyedeji was the MVP of District 20-5A in the Houston area and was named to the All-Greater Houston team and was a member of the TABC All-State Class 5A squad.
"This is a great opportunity to represent my family, my high school and Texas A&M in this all-star game," Oyedeji said. "This has been a fun senior year. I am working hard and trying to improve my game."
"We are so proud of Tobi for his accomplishments, both on and off of the basketball court," Texas A&M Head Basketball Coach Mark Turgeon said. "He has had a terrific senior year at Bellaire and is exactly the type of student-athlete that Aggies will love to support during his career. We know Tobi will represent Texas A&M in a first-class manner in the All-Star Game."
Members of this all-star game are selected on the following criteria: grade point average, SAT/ACT scores, strength of high school curriculum, college selection, community service involvement, extracurricular activities and basketball ability. Players have had to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and this year's group has an average of 3.6.
This is the second year for this all-star game.
Oyedeji is a member of the American All-Stars and he will be coached by Michael Lynch of Price High School in Los Angeles and A.D. Burtschi of Putnam High School in Oklahoma City.
The only other Texan on the squad is Jason Posphical of Prestonwood Christian. Royce Woolridge who has signed with Kansas will also compete. Of the 30 players invited, 20 will attend BCS schools.
